OUR PARISH

ABOUT OUR PARISH

Our Past

St Thomas à Becket Roman Catholic Church, designed by Edward Goldie (1856-1921), is an impressive Victorian Gothic Grade II Listed Building situated on Wandsworth's West Hill - where it has stood since 1895. The Parish has existed since the establishing of a Mission in 1841, when rooms above the George and Dragon Pub, then at the foot of West Hill, were used as a chapel.  This accommodation proved inadequate, and a small church, designed by Pugin, was built in the centre of Wandsworth in 1847.  This served as a place of worship for over 40 years, and the building of the present church was begun in 1893.

Our Present

We are a lively and vibrant Church congregation, which represents a complete cross section of the local community.  Our links with people of other Christian denominations and other Faiths, are important to us  -  as is our involvement in the life of the town.
Whilst we believe that people are more important than buildings, we also recognise that it is our responsibility to maintain the Grade II Listed Church of St Thomas à Becket, which in recent times has been extensively and tastefully restored.
